King County is the second most linguistically diverse county in America. There is a growing need for translation and interpreting services in business and the community. Businesses and service providers need people who can speak more than one language and who are knowledgeable working with different cultures.
Speaking another language besides English could be a key to employment for many of our bilingual students.
The two semester Translation & Interpretation course provides an introduction to translating and interpreting as well as other bilingual careers. Students will learn what it takes to become a successful interpreter. They will study areas that are critical for interpreters like medical, social services, banking and legal language. They learn how to listen effectively, how to take notes, how to train their memory and when to use simultaneous and consecutive interpreting.
Students will be working with professional interpreters and mentors to enhance the language skills in their heritage languages.
During the second semester, students will gain practical experience through interpreting at various internship sites. They will be able to earn college credits through successful participation in the course and prepare for an interpreting certification test.
