Book of the Week

For The Win

By Cory Doctorow

I find it challenging to read books that have technology as a key component because in many ways it can be like reading a foreign language. But, Cory Doctorow won me over with an earlier book (Little Brother) so I thought I would delve into this epic story of online gaming. In this near future world online games are mined for gold and treasure that translate into real world money. Big bosses across the world (although particularly in China and India) have created factories for gaming workers that are essentially sweatshops. Big Sister Nor and her associates are working to unionize gamers/workers worldwide and have infiltrated several gaming worlds. They've made contact with General Robotwallah in Mumbai, Wei-Dong (aka Leonard Goldberg) in Los Angeles, Jiandi (secret radio broadcaster) in Shenzhen among others. These brave kids face corruption and danger at every turn as they fight for their rights.
