New Procedures for School Transfers

New procedures for granting a transfer to a school outside your neighborhood service area went into effect January 4, 2010. If you plan to request a transfer for next year, please review the new process at http://hsd401.org/ourdistrict/board/policies/300/3132.pdf or call 206-433-2424 to request a copy.

Transfers will be granted in this priority order: 1) Hardship; 2) Siblings; 3) Special program or course of study; 4) Students of current Highline district employee

5) Non-resident transfers (living outside the district). In-district applications will be accepted until April 15. Renewal Inter-district transfer applications will be accepted until May 1st. New Inter-district transfer applications will be accepted beginning May 1. All transfers will be evaluated equally on the basis of the five priority criteria, regardless of when they are received in the district office.

The new procedures reflect the School Board's commitment to maintaining a system of neighborhood schools. The old procedures led to over-enrollment at some schools and under-enrollment at others. At over-enrolled schools, students are physically crowded and have had trouble getting all the courses they need. Under-enrolled schools have had trouble maintaining enough staff to offer a robust slate of courses. The new procedures will help remedy these issues. REMEMBER:

The morning bell rings at 9:05AM.

Class time begins at 9:10AM.

Students not in their classroom at 9:10AM will be marked tardy.

It is an unexcused tardy unless they are signed in by a parent

or have a written note.
