Children Have Options In Creating Education or CHOICE was established by a private foundation in conjunction with Highline Public Schools in 1993. It was initiated by a group of parents who wanted to closely monitor their children's academic and social environment. The foundation worked closely with the District and opened two classrooms and a computer laboratory at the Maywood site. The program flourished there for three years. In 1996, CHOICE was moved to the Manhattan Learning Center. The District assumed total responsibility for the program in 1997.
Beginning with the 2003-2004 school-year, the CHOICE program was relocated to the Woodside site. It is now known as the Highline CHOICE Academy. The Academy serves approximately 50 students grades 7-12 under the direction of two full-time certificated teachers and support staff.
Over the years, the academy has undergone a natural evolutionary process. Policies and procedures have been adapted and modified to create an environment that is conducive to student learning and growth. Throughout this process CHOICE personnel have been mindful to stay consistent with HIghline Public Schools policies as new and innovative procedures have been implemented.
The Highline CHOICE Academy emphasizes high parent involvement, student responsibility, high academic standards and a small learning environment for students at the secondary level.
