Velma Deckebach
passed away on August 5, 2006, while on vacation in Cannon
Beach, Oregon. She was 97 years old. She began her
Highline career in the office at Midway in 1955, and
retired in 1973 as Olympic Junior High’s head secretary.
Susie Johnson, age 61, passed away peacefully on
July 9, 2006. She was a primary teacher in our district
from 1966 until 1994. She taught at Angle Lake, North
Shorewood, Madrona, Southern Heights, and Mount View.
Marian Holmes passed away on July 25, 2006, at the
age of 90. Marian was a kindergarten teacher at Hazel
Valley from 1966 until 1975.
Joann Hughes passed away this summer. Joann worked
for the district as a teacher at Angle Lake and a district
speech pathologist from March 1956 until her retirement in
June 1985.
Irene Hallet passed
away on September 22 following heart surgery. Irene was a
teacher and co-ed tennis coach from 1956 to 1972. She
established the first Washington State Invitational tennis
tournament for girls in 1971. She later became the
assistant executive director for the WIAA. After retiring,
she was a member of the Highline Retired Teachers’
Association and served as president of that organization.
Iris Knapp, school board member from 1973-1985,
passed away on June 6 at the age of 85. Iris dedicated her
life to the pursuit of justice and social issues.
George “Bob” Mullikin passed away on June 16 at the
age pf 74. The taught and coached football at Evergreen
High School from 1959-1995 and was inducted into the
Washington State Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2003.
As many of you know, we lost one of our students to an
accidental shooting last week. Michael Miller was a
student at Evergreen High School, where he was a member of
the football and wrestling teams and was well-loved by
students and staff. Our hearts go out to Michael’s family.
