ENROLLMENT OF STUDENTS
All students will be registered in
the office and the principal will assign them to a classroom.
The assignment will be based on
current class loads. The principal will interview the parent and
student, gather as much information as possible about the student’s
previous educational history and will share that information with
the receiving teachers prior to the student’s first day of class.
Attendance
Parents/guardians are to notify
the school by 9:00 AM each day the student is absent and send a note
when the child returns to school indicating the reason for the
absence. If you child must be absent for an extended period of
time, please notify the office and classroom teacher.
SUPPLIES FOR STUDENTS
Students are required to provide
their own school supplies. Lists of those supplies are available in
the office. These supply lists are sent out with report cards at
the end of the year for the following year.
BRINGING ANIMALS TO THE CLASSROOMS
District policy #3423P strictly
forbids pets in the classroom unless appropriately caged and
appropriate hygiene in handling all animals is maintained. Dogs are
also not permitted on school grounds when students are present.
Safe & Civil Schools
Marvista is part of the
district-wide Safe and Civil Schools program designed to help
schools examine its practices that contribute to a safe and civil
environment. We have designed plans and will be teaching all our
students procedures for the common areas of our campus. Common
areas include but are not limited to the playground, main hallway,
restrooms, clinic, bus zone, arrival and dismissal areas, etc. We
will look at how our plans work this year and will make changes as
needed. Please communicate with us if you see ways we can improve
our procedures. Our number one goal is safety for all children.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Dismissal procedures for all
students
Children riding the bus are to
follow their designated route and line up in their bus line.
Children transported by day care
van are to walk to the Marvista mailbox and wait on the grassy area
until their ride arrives.
Bike riders are to walk to the
bike rack, walk bikes off grounds and proceed home.
Walkers or someone picks student
up:
Students that get picked up on 4th
Avenue are to walk toward 4th Avenue and wait on Marvista side of
the fence until their ride arrives
Students who get picked up in the
gravel parking lot are to walk to their designated route and wait
for their ride. Students are not to walk through the lot. Students
will wait in the grassy area between the portables and the railroad
ties.
Kindergartners are to wait
alongside the fence between the Kindergarten classrooms (Hagen,
Bento, PM K). Older students with kindergarten siblings may also
wait along the fence until their ride arrives. This lot is only for
parents of students with kindergarteners.
Siblings that walk home together
are to meet in the large circle on the blacktop (the large area
between the gym and the playground).
Students that walk home with
parents are to meet their parents in the grassy area next to the
wood toy structure east of the gym.
Students that walk home alone or
with a friend may proceed home after dismissal from class.
Telephone Use
The office telephone is a
business phone, therefore, student’s use will be limited to
emergencies. Students will NOT be allowed to call home to see if
they can go to a friend’s house after school or for similar types of
reasons. These types of activities are to be arranged at home.
Ordinarily, a child will not be allowed to call home for forgotten
items i.e. homework, band instruments, lunch etc.
Transportation
If Marvista Elementary is your
neighborhood school and you live one mile or more from school, you
are encouraged to use bus transportation. This will cut down on the
number of cars in the parking lot. If your child is new to the
school and you plan to have him/her ride the bus, please
let the office know so they can
contact Transportation in advance so they can make sure that there
is space available on the bus.
Expectations for Riding the Bus
Appropriate behavior must be used
while waiting in the bus lines. First arrived is first in line. No
eating while in bus lines.
Plan arrival at bus stops about 10
minutes before the bus arrives.
Do not throw rocks, snowballs or
other objects at the bus or cars
When boarding, wait your turn
without pushing or shoving
Choose a seat and remain seated
there for the trip. Use your “inside” voice.
If going to a friend’s house,
bring a note from your parents and ask your teacher or office staff
to sign it, then give the note to the bus driver.
Voters Registration
Citizens 18 years of age or older
are eligible to vote in primary and general elections. Voter
registration and absentee ballot forms are available in each
Highline School District Office, any school and the local King
County libraries.
Volunteer/Visitor procedures
Volunteers serve as a vital link
between home and school by providing a variety of services. We
encourage mothers, fathers, grandparents, relatives, friends and
older students to volunteer in our school.
Arrival
Students are to arrive no earlier
than 8:55 unless they are participating in before school classes
i.e. math, Spanish. Upon arrival, all students are expected to line
up in their designated areas. The playground is off limits before
school.
Late Arrivals
Tardiness not only causes
disruption in the classroom but also means the students miss out on
instructional time and opportunity. All tardy students must report
to the office. Please send a note accompanying your child to the
office when arriving late.
Early Dismissals
We strongly discourage requests
for students to leave campus early except in the case of illness or
for medical/dental appointments. In the event that early dismissal
is necessary, please send a note to the teacher stating the time you
will be picking your child up. Do not go to your child’s
classroom. The office staff will call for your child. These
procedures are for the safety and security of our students.
Bicycles
Students in grades 4,5 and 6 may
ride bikes, roller bladders, Skateboards and non-motor scooters to
school. According to Highline District policy, a protective helmet
must be worn when riding a bike, skateboard, scooter or roller
blades to school. District policy also prohibits the riding of
bicycles to and from school by children in grades K-3, even when
accompanied by an adult (policy #3424).
During the hours of 8:30-4:00 all
bicycles must be walked on school grounds. Skateboards, roller
blades and scooters must be carried while on school property.
Failure to follow these rules will result in loss of privileges.
Marvista Dress Code
The purpose of the dress code is
to reinforce and uphold the idea that the Marvista elementary staff,
students and volunteers are involved in creating a positive
environment for academic study.
Guidelines
Shorts and skirts must come at or
below the student’s fingertips.
Tops must be designed so that
midriff is not exposed.
Hats are not to be worn inside the
building.
Clothing with tobacco, alcohol,
drug, violence, weaponary, sexual innuendoes, foul language, etc. is
not permissible.
Spaghetti strap tops, unless worn
over another shirt, are not allowed.
No ripped jeans in torso, rear or
front.
Parents will be asked to bring a
change of clothing if a child arrives dressed inappropriately.
Dropping off students
The best place to drop off
students is either 4th avenue or the gravel lot behind the school.
Kindergartners may be dropped off in the circular drive in front of
the kindergarten classrooms. Please note this lot is designated for
kindergarten parents only, drop-off and parking.
The main driveway is reserved for
buses and day care vans from 8:55-9:10 AM. During peak hours of
8:45-9:15 and 3:30-4:00, we ask that all vehicles (except daycare
vans and buses) turn right at the stop sign at the end of the
driveway. This will help keep traffic flowing. It will take
everyone’s cooperation to keep our children safe.
Lost and Found
Please mark your child’s clothing
and lunches with his or her name. All small items found, such as;
keys, glasses and jewelry are kept in the office. Other items are
kept in the main hallway across from the gym. All unclaimed
articles are donated to charity at the end of year.
Lunch Accounts
Student lunches are $1.75 and milk
in 35 cents. Parents may apply money to their student’s lunch
account in any amount you wish on line or by check or cash. Please
make your check out to Marvista Elementary school and note your
child or children’s name at the bottom of the check. Checks may be
given to the office or the cashier, Mrs. April Kerr.
If your child transfers to a
different school with the Highline School District the account
follows them and at the end of the year any balance is rolled over
to the next year. Free and Reduced lunch forms can be obtained in
the office or from Mrs. Kerr.
Medications
Parents should make every attempt
to give their children any necessary medication, whether
prescription or over the count, at home whenever possible. If your
child must be given any type of medication at school, the following
conditions must be met:
All medications, including over
the counter medications, such as; Aspirin,
Tylenol, Advil, cough syrup or
cough drops, etc. must be authorized by a
Physician. A Medical
Authorization form must be signed by the parent/guardian and
physician and must be on file in the school clinic. Forms are
available in the school office.
The medication must be in the
original bottle with the student’s name, the
name of the medication and the
directions for administering it.
All medication will be kept in the
clinic in a locked cabinet. Students may not carry any medication
on their person or their backpacks except in
certain circumstances where life
may be threatened and a physician has specified
that the medication must be with the student at all times.
Students found with either
prescription or over the counter medication at school may be
disciplined. Any student distributing any medication at school will
be immediately suspended or expelled.
Nurse
The nurse, Mrs. Jane Cancro, is in
the clinic one day a week. Please contact her with any questions
regarding your child’s health or if your child’s health condition
changes. Also, it is critical to keep the office updated with
current emergency telephone numbers or name changes.
