School Board Develops Equity Policy


The Highline School Board is developing a district policy aimed at ensuring equity for students of all races and ethnicities in Highline schools. As part of this work, the board and staff are participating in a series of work/study sessions facilitated a national anti-racist training organization. Community members are invited to attend the next session on April 12, at 6:00 p.m. at the district office. Homepage

High School Students to Take State Test This Week


High school students will begin taking the new state standardized test this week. Testing starts Tuesday, March 16, with the reading portion of the High School Proficiency Exam (HSPE), followed by the writing exam on March 17 and 18. The tests will be taken by all tenth graders and by juniors and seniors who did not pass the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) last year. Homepage

Arts Council Seeks Input


Parents and community members will have an opportunity to voice their views about arts programs in Highline schools on Wednesday, March 31, at 7:00 p.m. at the school district central office.

Students Take State Exam for Medical Interpreter Certificate


Four students from the Puget Sound Skills Center (PSSC) Translation and Interpretation program traveled to Olympia on February 26 to take the Washington State DSHS Spanish language written medical interpreter test.

Two Proclamations Issued by Superintendent Welch


At the March 10 School Board meeting, proclamations were read by Superintendent John Welch for Classified School Employee Week (March 8-12) and School Retirees Appreciation Week (March 15-21).

Two Middle Schools in Line to Receive Influx of Federal Funds


Highline Public School has applied for a federal grant that would fund changes at Cascade and Chinook Middle Schools. The grant opportunity is part of new federal regulations that identify high-poverty schools with large numbers of struggling students. In order to get the funds, districts must agree to restructure the schools by next fall.

PSSC Involves Students in Strategic Planning – Vision 2020


This year, the Puget Sound Skills Center (PSSC) staff and students have been involved in a year-long process of creating a strategic plan that will guide their growth over the next decade.

Big Picture Schools Cited by President Obama in Reducing Drop-Out Rates


Highline Public Schools has incorporated this model in the array of high school options available in the district. Highlines's Big Picture High School is a small school (less than 200 students) offering personalized learning environment with an emphasis on internships and hands-on learning.

Two Highline High Students Receive Act Six Scholarships


Congratulations to Highline High School seniors Devanta Black and Hodo Hussein, winners of the Act Six Scholarship. The Act Six Leadership and Scholarship Initiative selects promising urban student leaders, like Devanta and Hodo, and fully funds their university education. In addition to the monetary award, the students will receive training and mentorship in leadership and service throughout their four years of university attendance.
