Six Highline Public Schools students received Washington Award for Vocational Excellence (WAVE) scholarships at a breakfast celebration on May 21. Washington State Superintendent of Public Instruction Randy Dorn was on hand to congratulate Crystal Rivera of Global Connections High School; Kyla Anderson of Mount Rainier High School; Yvonne Cha, Timothy Chamber, and Paul Hixons of Puget Sound Skills Center; and Tony Vo of Health Sciences Human Services High School. Awards were presented by Representative Bob Hasegawa, Representative Tina Orwall, Senator Joe McDermott, Legislative Assistant Holly Mortlock, and Representative Skip Priest.
WAVE scholarships provide two years of paid undergraduate study at any Washington public or private college, university, or licensed vocational school.
The state Legislature created the WAVE award program in 1984 to recognize students who excel in career and technical education, boosting their ability to reach education and career goals. The Workforce Training and Education Coordinating Board (Workforce Board) administers the award each year.
