Valley Celebrates Reading |
 |
Hazel Valley Elementary celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday and Read Across America in a big way, thanks to outstanding guests.
Superintendent Dr. Joe McGeehan started off the celebration with a touching reading of Oh the Places You'll Go by Dr. Seuss. "The book's message about how the children will succeed in life was such a gift, especially coming from someone who has worked so hard to educate students," said Helen Ewings, Hazel Valley librarian.
School Board President Tom Slattery shared with the students how he uses reading in his daily life. Students could see how reading is important to everything we do.
Fire Marshall Scott Lavielle told how reading helped him achieve his goals. He also shared the ABCs of fire safety.
To cap it off, Susan West, Channel 13 news reporter and a graduate of Highline High School, told the students how she was inspired to pursue a career in television news. She said a television reporter came to her school when she was in third grade. The reporter encouraged her to volunteer to read aloud in class as a way to prepare for a television career.
Just before the end of the assembly, the Cat in the Hat made a surprise visit!
When students returned to class, each was able to choose a free book, donated by Page Ahead bookstore.

All teachers and specialists participated. The winners were sent to our community room to receive a prize. During the day teachers and students were reading stories written by Dr. Seuss. At the end of the day the entire school joined together on the playground wearing their Dr. Seuss hats which they had made during the day. The weather cooperated and the pictures turned out great.
