CHOICE Academy History

  • In 1993 a private foundation, in conjunction with the Highline School District, set up the CHOICE (Children Have Options In Creating Education) Program.

  • The program was initiated by a group of parents who wanted to closely monitor their children's academic and social environment and actively participate in their education.

  • The foundation worked closely with the District and opened two classrooms and a computer laboratory at the Maywood site. The program flourished there for three years. In 1997, the CHOICE program moved to the Manhattan Learning Center.

  • The District assumed total responsibility for the program in 1997 when the private foundation moved to another school district.

  • Beginning with the 2003-2004 school-year, the CHOICE program relocated to the Woodside site and is now known as the Highline CHOICE Academy. The Academy serves a maximum of 50 students in grades 7-12 under the direction of our Principal, two full-time certificated teachers and support staff.

  • Over the years, the academy has undergone a natural evolutionary process. Policies and procedures have been adapted and modified to create an environment that maximizes student learning and personal acheivement.

  • Throughout this process the CHOICE Academy has stayed consistent with HSD policies as new and innovative educational strategies have been implemented.
